The Green Man
Leighton Bromswold
Real ales, real fire, real pub
About us
The Green Man is situated in the small Cambridgeshire village of Leighton Bromswold, near the Northamptonshire and Bedforshire borders. Surrounded by rolling fields, the village comprises of a tree-lined Avenue from end to end, with the pub positioned on the only main road junction in the centre.
Leighton Bromswold was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and its church, St Mary the Virgin's, has its roots dating back to 1250.
There is a rumour that the body of King Henry VIII's first wife Catherine of Aragon, who was incarcerated at the family home of Charles Wingfield at nearby Kimbolton Castle until her death in 1536, rested in Leighton Bromswold en route to her burial at Peterborough Cathedral. Most likely at the property of Thomas-Maria Wingfield, who was Stepson to Sir Robert Tyrwhitt of Leighton Bromswold. Other reports state that the funeral party rested at Sawtry, just up the A1.
Kimbolton Castle is now a successful mixed independent school.
The pub itself is steeped in history. It is believed that the building was the 2nd in the country to be registered as a Public House in 1650 (the first being in London), then being called The Blind Pig. Lizzie is planning on delving into its history to uncover more...
Imbedded within this rural farming community, for centuries this building has been an important focal place for socialisation and comfort, and hopefully will continue to be for centuries to come.
As a nod to its past, the current owners have named the bar in the Barn (which will be available for hire shortly) after its original name from 1650.
Andy and Lizzie Langridge bought The Green Man in June 2024, after seeing its potential over many nights out in the pub, and immediately set about turning it around. It has, and will continue to be, a real labour of love. Living only across the A14 in Catworth, they got to know the place and the people for over 18 years and were hooked.
They moved to the pub in July 2024, along with their daughter, Georgie and their ridiculous (but adorable) Chocolate Labrador, Woody, who can be seen monitoring things from behind the bar on most days. This is a real family affair and all members, including Woody, have their own roles.
The Langridge family previously owned (bought by Andy's parents Frank and Dot) The Ship Inn in Oundle for 39 years until May 2024. They are hoping Andy's experience and knowledge will serve them well in making this pub as successful, in its own unique way.
